The Rise of KPOP

What's up everyone! If you're new to my blog, welcome to Breakfast at Bridget's! To read my previous posts, just click on the links in the blog archive (just click the three lines on the top left corner). Anyway, hi again! It's Brianna and today's post is about surfing the Korean wave. This is for you fellow kpoppers.

I only joined the Kpop world at the end of 2016...thanks to BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) and their hit song, "Blood, Sweat and Tears"  피 ë•€ 눈물 . I had seen it trending on Youtube, but since I hadn't delved into the whole new music genre yet, I ignored it...till the end of last year. My older cousin also had a big impact on me because she was obsessed with Kpop. We were in Hong Kong, last December, and in the supermarkets, there were these snacks called Pepero and on it, were the faces of the EXO members. She bought it, not for her own snacking purposes, but to collect the boxes afterwards that she could keep. My cousin was also a fan of BTS (her bias being Jungkook) and told me all about the world of Kpop such as:
  • What are biases
  • What are bias wreckers
  • The names of each member in BTS etc.
I had already watched some music videos of BTS (in secret) so when my cousin showed me some, I pretended like it was all new to me. I made her point out all the members so I could learn their names (which took time tbh). Once I started actually getting "into" it, I began watching more and more BTS videos on Youtube, fangirling more and more, and began to realise that I had joined the world of Kpop in a few weeks. No regrets.

BTS
Now we're talking real stuff. Right now, South Korean music is becoming global and taking over the world. Many Kpop songs emphasise dance and rhythm rather than lyricism. But (this is from a biased view) for BTS, they encompass all three things in any song. If you search up the English lyrics for some BTS songs, you will be surprised how deep and meaningful they are. The advent of Kpop is a musical phenomenon that introduced South Korean culture to the world.

Today people all over the world, enjoy the music and shows produced by the booming industry. After BTS won the BBMAS's, I'm pretty sure everyone who weren't a fan yet became a fan. Who can even resist their charm, their talent and their physical appearance? The growing popularity cannot be denied. Hopefully, Kpop will not only serve as entertainment but also introduce South Korea's rich and broad history to the world.

In the Kpop culture, there are fandoms for each "idol group". For example the fandom name for BTS is ARMY, for BIGBANG the fandom name is VIP and so on. The thing I couldn't believe when I first joined was the number of members in some groups. Such as SEVENTEEN and TWICE. Just when I thought 5 members in One Direction was already a lot.

Funny story. When Jungkook released his cover of "We Don't Talk Anymore", I was in love with his English and his voice - despite the fact that it was quite breathy. I found the 3d version of it and sent it to my friend. Long story short, she hated it and now we refer to him as "Asthma guy" because according to her he needed a puffer. Then when Jimin and Jungkook released part 2 of that song, which mind you is 10 times breathier, once again I found the 3d audio of it and sent it to my friend (I get the best reaction every time).
